There has been an “up to now” overlooked holiday region that used to take a lot longer to get to from Sydney, that is primed and ready for not only growth but an influx of grey nomads looking for a coastal lifestyle that is still close to everything but far enough away … and it is not Byron Bay or the Central Coast. Welcome to Port Stephens.

Nelson Bay, the once popular childhood holiday spot, is experiencing a renaissance. I’ve seen firsthand that the area is a “not-so-secret spot” where people from Queensland to Sydney are relocating, attracted by its milder climate, great accessibility, and upcoming infrastructure developments.

Convenient Location

One key factor contributing to Port Stephens’ rising popularity is accessibility to major hubs like Newcastle. Thanks to recent road upgrades, the region is more connected than ever.

With Newcastle’s major hospitals just 30 minutes away and Newcastle Airport a mere 15 minutes from the heart of Nelson Bay, the ease of access makes Port Stephens an increasingly attractive option for retirees.

Newcastle Airport, soon to become international by August 2025, will add further convenience for residents, offering overseas flights in addition to its numerous daily domestic routes.

Port Stephens isn’t just about convenience; it’s about lifestyle. With flat terrain and easy proximity to the water, the area is perfect for walking, recreational fishing, swimming, boating, and fitness.

The Salamander Bay Shopping Centre offers a mix of shopping conveniences, while the housing market boasts a variety of options, from freestanding brick-and-tile homes to single-level villas, making it an ideal spot for downsizing and easy living.

Moderate Climate

The climate is another major draw. While Queensland can be too hot and humid, Port Stephens offers a more moderate climate, milder summers and comfortable winters, which is especially attractive to pre-retirees and retirees looking for a temperate environment.

Plus, property prices in Port Stephens offer much better value compared to the Central Coast or areas south of Sydney, although properties under the $1 million mark remain competitive, like much of the NSW coastline.

For retirees looking for a coastal lifestyle without breaking the bank, Port Stephens is a great choice. It’s close enough to major cities like Sydney and Newcastle to feel secure in terms of medical facilities and urban amenities, but it’s also a fantastic launchpad for caravanning adventures or a nice day visiting vineyards in the Hunter Valley with quick freeway access.
